Mental Health Issues Explained

Long Term Health Conditions

Living with a long-term health condition can affect every part of your life—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally too. You may find yourself dealing with fatigue, pain, changes in your independence, or the uncertainty of symptoms that come and go. These experiences can feel isolating, overwhelming, or even invisible to those around you.

Long-term health conditions come in many forms, including epilepsy, diabetes, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, asthma, ME/CFS, multiple sclerosis, long COVID, autoimmune diseases, and neurological conditions. Each person’s experience is different, but the emotional impact is very real—grief for the life you had, frustration with your body, fear about the future, or the weight of being misunderstood.

In counselling, you don’t need to hide how you feel or ‘stay strong.’ This is a space where your experience is heard, validated, and gently explored. Together, we can look at the emotional challenges that come with long-term illness—whether it’s anxiety, low mood, anger, or loss of identity—and work towards greater understanding, acceptance, and balance.

I approach this work with care, flexibility, and respect for the ups and downs of managing long-term conditions. You are not your illness. My role is to support you in living alongside it with more ease, self-compassion, and hope.

Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse can impact anyone, regardless of age, gender or background. It isn’t only physical harm; it can be emotional, psychological, sexual, financial, digital, or coercive control. You may feel confused, isolated or ashamed, questioning your memory, your judgement, even your worth. None of this is your fault. What you’ve lived through matters, and it deserves to be heard with care and without judgement.

In counselling, we work at your pace, with your safety and choices front and centre. Together we can name what’s happening, rebuild trust in yourself, and understand the patterns that kept you stuck. We might explore boundaries, self-esteem and trauma responses, develop grounding skills for anxiety and flashbacks, and create a practical safety plan that fits your circumstances.

I offer a calm, confidential space online. You decide what to share and when. Sessions can be short-term and focused, or longer-term for deeper healing, and are tailored to your needs. If you’ve left, are unsure, or are still in the relationship, you are welcome here.

You are not alone. When you’re ready, get in touch to arrange a free 15-minute consultation and see whether this support feels right for you.

If you’re worried about being monitored, we can discuss safer ways to communicate and keep records, and signpost specialist support when useful..

Addiction Recovery

Addiction can affect anyone. It can look like alcohol or drugs, or like gambling, gaming, porn, social media, shopping or work. However it shows up, it can leave you feeling stuck, ashamed, isolated, anxious about the impact on health, finances, study relationships and self-esteem. You are not a problem to be fixed; you are a person who deserves care and respect.

In counselling we work at your pace, without judgement.

Together we can map triggers, urges and patterns, understand what the behaviour has been helping you cope with, and build safer alternatives. We can explore motivation and ambivalence, plan for lapses and relapses, and develop practical skills for craving management, grounding and emotional regulation. Goals can be harm reduction or abstinence — you decide.

I offer a calm, confidential online space.

Sessions can be short-term and focused, or longer-term for deeper work, and are tailored to you. If addiction has touched family life, partners or carers are welcome to bring their perspective to your sessions, if you choose.

Recovery is a journey, not a straight line. When you are ready, get in touch to arrange a free 15-minute consultation and see whether this support feels right for you. If privacy is a concern, we can discuss safer ways to communicate and signpost specialist services alongside counselling when helpful.

Working with Young People

Working with young people is a meaningful part of my counselling practice. I offer therapeutic support to children and teenagers who may be struggling with emotional, behavioural, or social challenges. This can include anxiety, low mood, anger, self-esteem issues, bullying, family difficulties, or feeling overwhelmed by school or social pressure.

I work with under-18s in a safe, non-judgemental space where they can speak freely and feel heard. Often, young people find it hard to open up to family or friends, but therapy gives them a place where their thoughts and feelings are taken seriously, without fear of being criticised or misunderstood.

As a parent or guardian, you may notice changes such as withdrawal, mood swings, sleep problems, or a drop in school performance. These can be signs your child might benefit from extra support. If you're unsure, I’m happy to talk through any concerns. Together, we can help your child feel more confident, supported, and emotionally equipped to face life’s challenges.

Childhood Abuse & Trauma

The effects of childhood abuse and trauma often linger long after the events themselves have passed. You may not always have the words for it—just a sense that something doesn’t feel right, or that certain patterns and emotions keep resurfacing. This part of my work focuses on helping you make sense of those early experiences and how they continue to shape your life.

Whether the abuse was emotional, physical, sexual, or involved neglect, its impact is real and valid. You may carry feelings of shame, confusion, anger, or numbness. These are natural responses to unnatural experiences.

In our sessions, there’s no pressure to talk about anything before you’re ready. I offer a grounded, confidential space where you’re met with empathy and respect. My approach is calm, steady, and always tailored to what you need.

Healing from childhood trauma isn’t about forgetting—it’s about reclaiming your voice, your story, and your sense of safety. When you’re ready, I’ll walk that path with you.

Relationship Counselling

Relationships can bring us connection, love, and joy—but they can also challenge us in ways that feel overwhelming or painful. As a therapist, I offer a safe, neutral space where individuals or couples can explore what’s not working, understand deeper patterns, and begin to rebuild trust and communication.

You don’t have to be at crisis point for relationship counselling to be helpful. Therapy can support you through ongoing conflict, breakdowns in communication, infidelity, emotional distance, or major life transitions. It can also be a place to reflect and reconnect, especially when you feel stuck, unheard, or misunderstood.

Whether you come alone or with a partner, we can explore what’s happening in your relationship and what you need to move forward—whether that’s healing, clarity, or change. I work sensitively and without judgement, holding space for both challenge and hope.

Every relationship is unique, and so is the support I offer. When you’re ready, I’m here to listen.
